2015 Asian Food Fest

The Luncheon & Awards Dinner

We’re teaming up with the James Beard Foundation on June 28 to create two unique culinary experiences: the Taste Asia Luncheon featuring Michelin-starred Executive Chef and owner at Haldi and Chola, Hemant Mathur and wife Surbhi Sahni (Bittersweet NYC); and the Taste Asia Awards Dinner featuring the Executive Chef at Radiance and winner of the 2011 International Chinese Culinary Competition, Zizhao Luo.

The Event

Set in Times Square, Taste Asia is New York’s premier outdoor food festival—and more. Taste Asia chefs, including master chefs from around the world and some of New York’s finest, will showcase their abilities using Taste Asia’s trademark fully equipped outdoor kitchens—wowing the crowd and live television viewers. They will focus on ingredients and recipes that span across Asian countries and cultures.

A host of Asian and Asian-inspired restaurants will be onsite to provide tastings, and a live stage featuring Asian cultural performances will round out the experience. The resulting celebration of Asian cuisine serves as a bridge connecting not only those countries, but also East and West, through the love of food and culture.

Taste Asia is the largest Asian food festival in North America and the only live-cooking event at Times Square. The Taste Asia 2015 includes a Best Asian NYC Restaurants Contest (June 1-20), a two-day food festival (June 26-27), a day of Asian and Asian-inspired cooking and cultural performances (June 26), the grand finals of the 7th International Chinese Culinary Competition (June 27), and two affiliated Taste Asia banquets at James Beard House (June 28).

Taste Asia is a partnership between Epoch Times and NTD Television to promote Asian food and culture to New Yorkers.

Taste Asia History

Our journey started 6 years ago in a humble Chinese restaurant on Park Avenue where we held our very first International Chinese Culinary Competition. It was the first time Chinese chefs around the world came together in New York to share their passion for traditional Chinese cuisine.

The following year, more participants joined, and the scale of the competition grew. We changed the location to the banquet hall of Chelsea Piers. One of our biggest challenges was to find a large-enough venue equipped with proper Chinese stoves and heating systems for Chinese chefs. We eventually built a 5-station Chinese kitchen inside Chelsea Piers.

Chelsea Piers was still not big enough for our competition and in 2010, we made a bold decision to move the entire competition outdoors to Times Square. In order to meet the challenges of an outdoor cooking event, we had to design and construct five fully equipped Chinese mobile kitchens that resemble delicate Tang Dynasty styled pavilions. Soon as the mobile kitchen design was realized, we felt that the event has finally found its home, and it has been held in Times Square ever since.

In the past 6 years, nearly 500 chefs from 12 countries and regions have competed in the Competition. A total of $143,000 cash prizes have been awarded to winning participants. In 2014, we’ll return to Times Square with an even bigger event, introducing prominent chefs representing not only the Chinese cuisine, but also other Asian cuisines and countries to demonstrate their culinary traditions and techniques.

Best Chinese Cuisine Contest

To celebrate the Asian Heritage Month, we’re teaming up with NTD Television and Epoch Times to find the most authentic Chinese restaurants in America. The voting period is May 1–31.

The Contest

Participating restaurants will invite their patrons to vote online for their favorite, most authentic Chinese restaurants through social media platforms and in-store “Best Chinese Cuisine” posters. Voters will get a chance to win weekly dinner vouchers, as well as tickets to the “Feast Asia Banquets” at the prestigious James Beard House.

The top 20 “Best Chinese Restaurants” will be generated by a combination of online votes, mystery diners and panel judges. The “Best Chinese Restaurants” will be given awards on Taste Asia Festival on Times Square in June, 2015.

We’re searching for the best places in five categories of Chinese cuisine:

  • Sichuan
  • Shandong
  • Cantonese
  • Huaiyang
  • Northeastern
  • Specialty

Cathy Erway’s Dumpling Making Contest

Hey, dumpling lovers! Join Cathy Erway, celebrated author of The Food of Taiwan and The Art of Eating In, at Taste Asia for the first ever Dumpling Making Contest.
We’ll be choosing three Dumpling Apprentices to learn how to make juicy pork dumplings from scratch with Ms. Erway live in Times Square. All three apprentices will win a sweet prize, but only one apprentice will obtain the ultimate honor of “Dumpling Master.” To be deemed the Dumpling Master, an apprentice must master the technique and fold the most beautiful dumplings on stage. The master will win a two piece Asian cook’s knife set!

To enter to be a Dumpling Apprentice, tweet a description of your most creative dumpling filling and hashtag #TasteAsiaNYC. These deliciously unique dumplings could be sweet or savory, or sweet and savory—go wild! For example: “Apples, cinnamon, caramel #TasteAsiaNYC” or “Butternut squash, pesto, goat cheese #TasteAsiaNYC.” Apprentices must be able to join us in Times Square on Friday, June 26. Get tweeting, and good luck to all!
